Según el American Board of Industrial Hygiene, la higiene industrial es la disciplina de la anticipación, la identificación, la evaluación y el control de los riesgos que se originan en el medio ambiente de trabajo con el objetivo de proteger la salud y el bienestar de los trabajadores y salvaguardar al conjunto de la comunidad. El término"higiene industrial"ganó popularidad hacia el año 1900 con la formación de la Sección de Higiene Industrial de la Asociación Americana de Salud Pública. Ya que había algunos higienistas industriales, las organizaciones comenzaron a utilizar sus conocimientos para evaluar y mejorar la salubridad del ambiente de trabajo, en gran parte, con un enfoque centrado en los riesgos químicos y el ruido. Desde entonces, la aplicación y alcance de la Higiene Industrial se ha ampliado mucho, extendiéndose a otros peligros que pueden afectar no solo a los trabajadores sino también a sus familias y las comunidades.
